“Know all men by these present that I Jacob Cartwright of the County of Washington & State of Arkansas have this day bargained, sold, conveyed, and delivered to Willis Wallace of the County & State aforesaid a certain negro boy names Nelson about twenty four years of age for consideration of a boy named Moses and a gray mule in exchange as full consideration to me for the said Nelson and I warrant the so Nelson to be sound both in body & mind, a slave for life and free from the claim or claims of all and every person whatsoever. Lawfully claiming the same, a witness whereof I have (this fifteenth day of June AD 1840) set my name and offered my seal.                                                                Jacob Cartwright

This thirty first day of July 1841 personally came Alfred Wallace and Augustus J Ward, subscribing witnesses to the assured bill of sale from Jacob Cartwright to Willis S Wallace for a negro man named Nelson, before me an acting Justice of the Peace, and being duly sworn according to the law depose and say that the said Jacob Cartwright signed sealed and acknowledged & delivered said bill of sale as his act and deed in their presence on the say that the same ____ date.

“Know all men by these presents that I Willis Shepherd Wallace of the Town of Fayetteville County of Washington and State of Arkansas have this day bargained, sold, conveyed and delivered unto Alfred Wallace of the Town, County, & State aforesaid a certain Negro Boy named Nelson about twenty four years of age. Which boy Nelson I warrant to be sound both in body & mind, a slave for life and free from the claim or claims of all & every person whatsoever lawfully claiming the same for the sum of one thousand to me in hand paid, the receipt is hereby full acknowledged. As witness my hand this sixteenth day of June AD 1840.
